Comprehensive Dementia Care Models Highlighted in Annual State of the Science Review

January 2025

THOROFARE, NJ – Each year in the January/February issue, Research in Gerontological Nursing (RGN) publishes an Annual State of the Science Review (formerly State of the Science Commentary) to update the professional community on the state of the science for one aspect of gerontological nursing research. Written by esteemed experts, this contribution to the scientific discussion is designed to review progress, chart the course of future research, and coalesce priorities.

The 2025 Annual State of the Science Review, “Comprehensive Dementia Care Models: State of the Science and Future Directions,” by Komal Patel Murali, PhD, RN; Joan G. Carpenter, PhD, RN; Ann Kolanowski, PhD, RN, FAAN; and Andrea Gilmore Bykovskyi, PhD, RN, with a Response to the Commentary by Pamela Z. Cacchione, PhD, RN, CRNP, BC, FGSA, FAAN, highlights different care models for persons with dementia and their care partners.

“The 2025 Commentary is timely and is an important guide for gerontological nurse researchers to contribute to evidence regarding comprehensive models of care,” states Heather M. Young, PhD, RN, FAAN, FGSA, Editor of RGN. “Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias touch the lives of so many older adults and their families. Comprehensive approaches to care are essential to promote quality of life and optimal function.”

The Annual State of the Science Review has become an important, anticipated, and thought-provoking yearly publication in the field of gerontology. Access this year’s article in the free January/February 2025 issue at https://journals.healio.com/doi/10.3928/19404921-20241211-02.
