Journal of Gerontological Nursing Celebrates 50 Years of Publication
December 2024
THOROFARE, NJ – The Journal of Gerontological Nursing (JGN) is commemorating its 50th anniversary with a special issue published in December 2024 (https://journals.healio.com/toc/jgn/50/12). This special issue includes articles that cover JGN’s past and future, focusing on caregiving, the re-emergence of the teaching nursing home initiative, and its contributions to the field of gerontological nursing overall.
The issue opens with an article written by current Editor Donna M. Fick, PhD, GCNS-BC, AGSF, FGSA, FAAN, and Editor Emerita Kathleen C. Buckwalter, PhD, RN, FAAN. The editors celebrate JGN’s journey over the past 50 years, recognizing Edna Stilwell, the founding editor, as well as citing historical milestones and precedented articles and columns.
The editors also discuss the future of gerontological and age-friendly care. Additional articles featured in the issue include:
- “The Way We Were: JGN From Then to Now,” by Akter et al., which examines the more than 400 editorials published between 1975 and 2024 that have contributed to gerontological care, education, research, and policy;
- “Foresight and Forecast: The Future of Gerontological Nursing for the Next 50 Years,” by Booker et al., which considers what the future of gerontology holds, and highlights several areas such as long-term care, serious mental illness, and technology;
- “Defining Informal Caregiving and Caregivers for Persons Living with Dementia,” by Happ et al., which clearly defines role criteria for dementia caregiving research, policy, and programs;
- And “From the Past to Present to Create a Workforce for the Future: The Teaching Nursing Home Collaborative,” by Kitt-Lewis, which looks at creating a workforce for the future by revitalizing the Teaching Nursing Home initiative.
“As Editor, I am proud and excited about the 50-year journey JGN has been on, bringing the highest quality articles on gerontological care and research to the world,” states Dr. Fick. “You will not want to miss reading and sharing this special issue and celebrating with us! I am grateful to the writers, reviewers, readers, and SLACK professionals who have contributed to improving the care of older adults for 50 years and will shepherd us into 100 years.”
